The Cheetah Outreach centre, situated at Paardelvlei in Somerset West, is a fun and educational outing for children and adults alike. Visitors can enjoy a personal encounter with an adult cheetah or with a cheetah cub. The Cheetah Outreach project is a fantastic initiative which aims to raise awareness of the decline in cheetah numbers due to loss of habitat, predation and poaching. Currently there are about 20 cheetahs at the centre.
LE BONHEUR CROC FARM
Le Bonheur Crocodile Farm is located in Paarl and is a family friendly farm where there are loads of kids’ activities and fun things to do from Croc pond tours to snake exhibits, crocodile cage diving and bass fishing.
EAGLE ENCOUNTERS: SPIER WINE ESTATE
Eagle Encounters has been going strong since 2001, rehabilitating and releasing birds of prey, promoting conservation and education. Enjoy an up-close-and-personal interactions with eagles, hawks, falcons, owls, kites, buzzards, snakes and lizards. Kids also enjoy the piglets, rabbits, tortoises, chickens and unique playground.
THE BUTTERFLY WORLD ZOO
The Butterfly World Zoo is a sanctuary for small wild animals and is more than a butterfly park. This lush tropical garden is also a sanctuary for exotic animals, including birds and reptiles. It’s a fascinating place to visit, and especially popular among children. Other attractions at Butterfly World include a large skeleton park, a tea party and interactive animal demonstrations on weekends and during school holidays.
Monkey Town Primate Centre, located on the N2 in Somerset West is a Wildlife Centre for monkeys and apes as well as a large variety of other species of animals. There are more than 250 primates and 26 different exotic species of monkeys and apes including Tammy, Ruby, and Sunny, our famous chimp sisters.
Monkey Town is not just a primate centre but also a wildlife centre with over 700 animals in total to admire. Visitors to the well-designed enclosure at Monkey Town observe the monkeys from caged walkways allowing the monkeys to roam freely on the outside.
THE GIRAFFE HOUSE
The Giraffe House aims to provide a place for people to enjoy a family picnic in the fresh air, whilst experiencing and learning about animals and conservation. The wildlife education is presented in an informative wildlife conservation program suited for the individual group. The daily animal shows are very popular and gives the visitor the opportunity to meet and hold some interesting creatures.
DRAKENSTEIN LION PARK
Drakenstein Lion Park was established in 1998 to provide lions in distress with sanctuary, where they could live in safety, free from abuse and persecution, and be treated with the compassion and respect they deserved.
The Park is situated in the scenic Cape Winelands and comprises of 50 acres of sprawling lion habitat and is the only genuine lion sanctuary in the Western Cape, with the largest lion population, including rare white lions.
